I began my law enforcement career in 1981, a time when hearing protection was minimal to nonexistent. Throughout my career, I was regularly exposed to extremely loud environments, annual firearms qualifications, sirens mounted inside the engine compartments and under the seats, radios with heavy static and cross-talk positioned right next to us, and shoulder-mounted microphones that made sure the sound was always close to our ears. We even had scanners blaring other agencies’ traffic. Over the years, this constant noise exposure slowly took a toll on my hearing. I didn’t fully realize how bad my hearing had become until I was close to retirement. I found myself reading lips, struggling to follow conversations, and having difficulty hearing the TV or enjoying music. Everything started to sound muffled or unclear, and I began to withdraw from conversations because I couldn’t always keep up with what was being said. That’s when I turned to Ponce Law, and I’m very grateful I did. They’ve ensured that I get regular hearing evaluations every two years and that I’m eligible for new hearing aids every five years. While I haven’t received my first set of hearing aids yet, I’m excited to finally hear more clearly, enjoy music again, and be fully present in conversations without needing others to repeat themselves or raise their voices. Ponce Law has been a huge help in supporting this important part of my health, and I truly appreciate their commitment to making sure I get the care I need after years of service.
