When my ex-wife filed for divorce, I initially represented myself: I’m a historian with expertise in the Constitution, I teach, I’m educated, surely, I thought, I could read the relevant legislation like any attorney and respond accordingly. I eventually learned, though, I could not simultaneously emotionally experience and cope with an unwanted divorce and be an attorney. A friend who also experienced an unwanted divorce recommended her attorney whom I discovered after calling was retiring; however, he recommended Mark, who was hired, in part, to handle divorce and family cases as his replacement.
Mark has been a godsend. He has been extremely sympathetic toward me and has demonstrated in words and actions utmost compassion. He has tolerated a massive amount of tears, anger, and frustration from me. He is responsive but considerate of when to put me “on the meter.” He knows how concerned I am for my kids, he knows my stance on divorce in general, and has balanced these with the reality of no-fault divorce legislation. I am utterly appalled at divorce legislation, yet Mark has repeatedly sat me down and said, in so many words, “She wants a divorce. It’s legal. There’s nothing you or I can do to change that. What I’m going to do for you is get you and your kids into the best situation possible given existing law.†And he has done just that.
I would not have made it through the divorce process as much as I have without Mark guiding me. To say he’s competent is an understatement – he’s been doing this over 30, 35 years and he demonstrably knows his stuff. I think it worth noting as well that Mark does not come across as a snake oil salesman either, or some stereotypical sleazy divorce lawyer; he’s genuinely a good guy who will take care of you and get you through the trauma of divorce.
