I paid a $3K retainer for a fairly simple tax issue created by the incompetent service at H&R Block. Long story short, I should have just put that money towards the taxes I owned. They basically said yes you owe those taxes and penalties. The attorney bills that kept coming in were, we took your paperwork out of the cabinet. Put it back in the cabinet. Repeat etc. You get the idea. I finally was able to pay the whole debt off. Without any significant service I can tell from the law firm. Oh, when I asked for the remaining balance of my retainer they don’t return that. But the penalty I paid the IRS could probably be returned if I paid for more legal “work”.
Definitely not on “my side”. Sided with the tax authority at every turn. Never dealt with the main attorney except at first meeting. A very bad experience where I was not represented fully while the “other side” was openly praised. It was totally bizarre and cost me a fortune.
