Sarah Dewein Dba, an attorney and lawyer based in Des Moines, Iowa, has received mixed reviews regarding her role as a custody evaluator. While some clients appreciate her thoroughness in visiting homes and engaging with families, others express concerns about her perceived biases and the impact on their children’s voices. Overall, potential clients are advised to consider their unique family dynamics and seek an evaluator who aligns with their values of fairness and respect.
Sarah Dewein evaluated our custody case, visiting each home once. Although she heard directly from the children, she dismissed their clearly expressed wishes, suggesting they were likely influenced by their mother. This was deeply upsetting to them—so much so that they’ve since struggled to trust other adults with their personal experiences and choices.
I would strongly caution LGBTQIA individuals and families against working with Sarah Dewein as a custody evaluator. Throughout our case, it was evident that her biases significantly influenced her recommendations, and her behavior reflected clear homophobia. Rather than approaching our situation with fairness and professionalism, she brought personal judgments into the process, creating a deeply unbalanced and harmful experience. Custody evaluations require impartiality and sensitivity, especially when dealing with diverse family structures, but that was not our experience with her. If you are seeking an evaluator who will treat you with respect and equity, I recommend looking elsewhere.
