I have had issues with my mental health from the time the Navy discharged me. These issues arose while serving as an Independent Duty Corpsman on the nuclear submarine John Adams, SSBN 620. After a critical medical evacuation of a shipmate, who I had diagnosed with appendicitis, was killed during the transfer from our submarine to a helicopter, I felt as if I had sent my patient to his death. For many years I suffered from the memories of that day in December. I did not know that I was suffering from the effects of PTSD. Many health care providers in the private sector, who I sought out for help, either told me that my issues would fade with time or prescribed medication(s) that dulled my senses. I felt betrayed without an advocate to help me, until I called Perkins Studdard. A very kind and compassionate first contact listened to my concerns when I called. Mellissa treated me as if I was her top priority. She encouraged me to submit any documents I had to her and an appointment with Mr. Studdard would be set up. During my phone interview, Mr. Studdard told me my situation had merit and that he would like to represent me. A case manager, Jessica, was assigned to me and the process to obtain relief began. I have never met such empathetic people who all seem to have one goal, to serve the needs of Veterans.
