Very responsive and proactive in helping my clients close on what ended up being a difficult transaction. Sperry & Hatley got us there, though.

I’ve had a very disappointing experience with this law firm. Despite multiple attempts, Matt Malone has not responded to my emails or phone calls. They made an error on a deed, and now they are refusing to correct their mistake. The lack of communication and accountability is extremely unprofessional. I would not recommend their services—save yourself the trouble and look elsewhere.

I cannot discourage you strongly enough…do not hire these people! It takes A LOT for me to write a negative review, and i truly don’t enjoy doing it, but Sperry has undoubtedly earned this review. Let me give you some quick bullet points of things I experienced in one RE transaction:

Would not recommend working with them.

We are Realtors and do as many closings as we can with Sperry law. George takes great care with clients w a big smile in the Rock Hill office. Hatley runs the uptown Charlotte market professionally and efficiently. Always have great experiences w them and they always answer questions thoroughly. Love these guys

Buyers of a property we were selling chose these realtors. First email they sent had over 15 “title issues” only one of them needed to be paid. Bonds then came up. When talking with our normal lawyer they advised that bonds don’t attach to properties and that there was no money owed and no one to even pay. We tried explaining this to Michele. She said Jacob would have to double check it and that she sent him all the info. This was 1 1/2 weeks before closing. We checked in multiple times with no update. All we got was “still waiting on attorney to review” morning of the closing comes and Jacob sends out an email asking about the bonds. He didn’t even look over the title of this property until the day of the closing. Then after a few hours he informed us they would have to start an investigation on the bonds. (Keep in mind e talked to so many people who said this was common law for real estate and they never heard of an attorney thinking bonds were anything” over the period of another week and a half we heard NOTHING left voicemails with no response and no returned emails from Jacob. After hounding them they finally came back saying bonds were cleared. This was on a Friday. They set the new closing for the following Monday. Monday morning they send out a closing statement. Now showing 2 new “judgements” that none of us were ever made aware of. I asked for a copy that morning and sent it straight to my normal lawyer. He said they were fines and you do not pay fines at a closing. He then sent over the statute for these lawyers because they obviously needed it. Come time to do the closing. We deal with one of the partner attorneys Jacob wasn’t even there. Closing went smooth and they removed the two problems after the closing and paid us the difference. Around 3 hours after closing they sent an email stating we would have to pay tax lien for another previous owner. 2 lawyers before this cleared this previous owner with no social. They then said to not have to pay it we would have to find this person and they would have to sign a not me form. We just decided to pay the $300 to not have to deal with it any longer. We told them just take our money. At 430 same day we had not been paid for the property but new owners had already taken possession of the home. We started calling at 10 till 4 trying to figure out where our checks were and surprise no answer. Next morning we just decided to go to rock hill and see what was going on. As soon as we walked in receptionist handed our checks to us they didn’t even inform us our money was ready.

I’m not one to usually review someone is a bad way because I understand mistakes happen and people aren’t perfect. But I can’t go on without saying something and helping prevent others from the lack of education and potential to cost many people thousands of dollars due to ignorance! If my partner and I had not had a voice in the sale of a house we were selling then this firm wouldve successfully costed us 23k dollars in FINES liens and judgements that were completely unrelated to the property at sale! We then took matters into our own hands and called two lawyers that had recently done a title search on this property and cleared the title free and clear!! I presented Sperry and Hatley with these findings and law statues that as a lawyer they should’ve already known and was able to get it all cleared except for 308 dollars that we did still have to pay to a completely random person in a totally different counties tax lien. You are welcome i guess! PLEASE when i tell you do not fall victim to this lawyer’s incompetence, ignorance, and lack of education in his job !
